There are two ways to download your EPF passbook—the EPFO Member Passbook portal and the UMANG app. If you only need your PF balance, you can use SMS or the missed call service. This guide also covers the 2025 rule change that users must know.

Quick Answer

To download your PF statement, log in to the EPFO Member Passbook portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in, or open the UMANG app, go to View Passbook, enter your UAN and the OTP, select your Member ID, and download the PDF. It is free, but your UAN must be activated first.

You usually need your PF statement at short notice: for a home loan, a visa application, or a new employer’s background check. This guide explains every working method to download PF statements in 2026, along with the recent EPFO change that prevents some users from accessing their account.

What Changed in 2025

As of 1 August 2025, EPFO discontinued UAN activation through its website. If your UAN is not yet activated, you can no longer do it on the portal. You must activate it using Aadhaar-based face authentication on the UMANG app, along with the Aadhaar Face RD app. Once your UAN is active, portal login and passbook download work as usual. Activation steps are given at the end.

What is a PF statement?

A PF statement, officially known as the EPF passbook, is a detailed record of your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account maintained by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

It contains a complete history of your EPF account, including your monthly contributions, your employer’s contributions, the amount allocated to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), annual EPF interest credited by the EPFO, and any withdrawals or transfers made over time.

A PF statement is different from a PF balance check. Services like SMS or missed calls only show your current EPF balance, whereas the PF statement provides a detailed transaction history in a downloadable PDF format.

This document is commonly required for loan applications, employment verification, visa processing, and other financial or official purposes. When people refer to a PF statement, they are usually talking about the EPF passbook.

Things You Should Know Before Downloading Your PF Statement

Before you download your PF statement, make sure you have the following:

  • Your UAN (Universal Account Number): This is the 12-digit number that links all your EPF accounts across different employers. You can find it on your salary slip or ask your HR department.
  • An activated UAN: You can access your PF statement only if your UAN has been activated. If it isn’t, you’ll need to activate it first.
  • A registered mobile number: The mobile number linked to your UAN is required to receive the OTP for login and verification.
  • Employer contributions are up to date: Your EPF passbook is updated only after your employer files the Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) with the EPFO. If recent contributions are missing, your employer may not have filed the latest ECR yet.

How to Download Your PF Statement from the EPFO Portal?

The EPFO Member Passbook portal is the most reliable way to download your complete PF statement in PDF format. You can access it from a laptop or any mobile browser.

  • Visit the EPFO Member Passbook portal and make sure you are on the official .gov.in website.
  • Log in using your UAN, password, and the CAPTCHA code. In some cases, EPFO may ask for additional verification.
  • After signing in, you’ll see a list of your Member IDs. Select the Member ID for the employer whose PF statement you want to view.
  • Click View Passbook to check your contribution history, employer contributions, interest credited, and any withdrawals or transfers.
  • To keep a copy, click Download Passbook. Your PF statement will be downloaded as a PDF, which you can use for official or financial purposes.

How to download PF Statement from the UMANG app?

Follow these steps to download the PF statement from the UMANG App:

  • Install UMANG from the Play Store or App Store and open it.
  • Open All Services, then EPFO, then Employee Centric Services.
  • Tap View Passbook and enter your UAN.
  • Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Select the Member ID you want, then view or download the passbook PDF.

Download PF Statement through SMS or missed call (balance only)

You cannot download your PF statement using this method. It only helps you quickly check your PF balance and latest contribution using your registered mobile number.

  • Missed call: dial 9966044425. This service works only if your UAN is activated and your KYC details (Aadhaar, PAN, or bank account) are updated with EPFO.

Common PF Statement downloading issues and fixes

Common PF Statement Issues and Fixes

Latest contribution not showing
Your employer may not have filed the latest ECR, or EPFO is still processing it. If you recently activated your UAN, wait a few hours before checking again.

Invalid UAN or activation failed
This is usually due to a mismatch between your Aadhaar and EPFO records. Ask your employer to update your details and try again.

Forgot your password
Click Forgot Password on the EPFO login page and reset it using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Previous PF account not visible

Your old Member ID may not be linked to your current UAN. Transfer your old PF account through the EPFO portal to view all contributions in one passbook.

For Businesses verifying employees at scale

If you are an employer, an HR platform, or a lender that needs to verify UAN, EPFO membership, or employment history programmatically, rather than one passbook at a time, Surepass has APIs for that.

FAQs

Ques: Can I download my PF statement without a UAN?

Ans: No. The passbook is accessible only with an activated UAN. If you do not have one, ask your employer, then activate it on UMANG via Aadhaar face authentication.

Ques: Is downloading the PF statement free?

Ans: Yes, it is free on both the EPFO portal and UMANG. EPFO no longer issues hard copies of the annual statement, so you download and print it yourself.

Ques: Why is my latest contribution not showing?

Ans: Your employer may not have filed the monthly ECR yet, or the update is still in batch processing. Wait for a few days, and about 6 hours after a fresh activation.

Ques: How do I check just my balance quickly?

Ans: From your registered mobile, send EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899, or give a missed call to 9966044425. You get the balance, not a downloadable statement.

Ques: Can I still activate my UAN on the EPFO website?

Ans: No. Since 1 August 2025, activation has moved to Aadhaar face authentication on the UMANG app. The website now shows a discontinuation notice.

Ques: I changed jobs. Will both employers show in one statement?

Ans: Only if both Member IDs are linked under the same UAN. If not, transfer the old account under your current UAN so everything appears together.
